RM Sotheby’s Sand Lots online auction starts on May 25, with 67 lots of great summer rides. Bidding ends on June 1.
This auction is full of cars — and at least one SUV — that are ideal for sandy, summery spots. Some of the cars are eye-popping sunny-day rides for sure — there is a 2005 Ford GT and a 2017 Ford GT.
But let’s look at some of this auction’s going-to-the-beach cars.
One of the most-interesting offerings is a 1966 Meyers Manx — the classic 1960s fiberglass dune buggy built on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis. These fun cars, which also ran on donor VW engines, were everywhere in Southern California from the mid 1960s through the early 1970s. They were cheap, fun transportation.
This particular Meyers Manx was built on a 1959 VW Beetle chassis, and it is one of the first 200 made. These cars, which are indeed very good at moving on a sandy beach, are making quite a comeback.
Another fun car on offer is a Coca-Cola-themed 1965 VW Beetle, which comes with the classic roof rack. That rack is filled with water skis, a wicker picnic basket and a Coca-Cola-themed grill and cooler.
This Beetle carries a pre-sale estimate of $18k to $26k.
This car would not do well on the sand, but it would look great in a parking lot right next to the beach.
Finally, there is a 1990 Mercedes-Benz 250 GD “Wolf,” which could conquer any beach anywhere.
This truck, which may well have started out as a military vehicle, was completely rebuilt and refurbished into a gorgeous two-door, open-air fun machine — including heated seats! This is quite a summer ride.
I think this lot will attract many, many bids.
