RM Sotheby’s continues its growth in the European market with the addition of the Aumann Collection — a single-owner collection of important cars from Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, Veritas and Aston Martin. The event will take place at Motorworld in Munich on November 23, with all but five of the lots on offer being sold at no reserve.
Among the stars of this event is a 1923 Mercedes 2.0-L Indianapolis Sports Racer — one of four prepared by Daimler Motoren Gesellschaft for the 1923 running of the Indy 500. The car has been in well-known collections since the 1940s and carries with it an estimate of €3.8m to €5m EUR.
Alongside the Indy racer is a 1928 Mercedes-Benz 710 SS Roadster by Corsica — a car that is coming to market for the first time in 26 years — and a 1929 Mercedes-Benz 710 SSK Roadster by Sindelfingen. The SS was originally delivered to Gordon Watney and was later rebodied by Corsica as an open two-seater. It won the Co-Chairman’s Trophy at Pebble Beach in 1997 and was the winner of the Public Referendum Vote at Villa d’Este in 1999. It’s thought to be worth from €3.5m to €4.5 EUR. The SSK has been used in a number of rallies and tours, including the Mille Miglia Storica. It has FIA Historic Vehicle Identity papers from 1995 and is thought to be worth from €1.3m to €2m EUR.
Other highlights include a 1955 Porsche 550 Spyder by Wendler — a car with in-period race history at SCCA events in the U.S. The car has its numbers-matching engine and transaxle, and comes with two inspection reports from specialists Andy Prill and Jochen Bader. It’s thought to be worth from €3.4m to €4.2m EUR. A 1957 Porsche 356A Carrera GT Speedster by Reutter will also be on offer, this one being a rare four-cam “GS/GT” Speedster with a large history file, spare wheel and tool roll. It’s estimated at €650,000 – €800,000 EUR and is offered without reserve.
Also look for a 1948 Veritas RS, a 1947 Veritas Grossmutter — the first of the make produced — and a 1949 Veritas Meteor to be offered here. Three BMW 327/8s are also included, as well as a 1965 Aston Martin DB5 — the only non-German car in the collection.
“I am delighted to announce this remarkable collection for our upcoming sale in Munich,” said Marcus Görig, Director of Sales, Germany. “Now a regular fixture in the calendar, I am thrilled to offer this outstanding selection of blue-chip classics to our sale. With everything from a 1965 Aston Martin DB5, all the way to a 1923 Mercedes 2.0-Litre Indianapolis Sports Racer, there is truly something for everyone.”
