RM Sotheby’s had a big three days in Monterey. In total, the company racked up $161,169,680 in sales at this 27th annual event, with 87% of the lots on offer finding new homes.
Top sale at this flagship event was the 1960 Ferrari 250 GT SWB California Spider — the first SWB Cal Spider built — which sold for $17,055,000. Just behind it was the 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider, driven by Carroll Shelby in competition in-period, which sold for $12,985,000.
A 1995 Ferrari F50 with just 8,556 miles set a new world record price of $5,505,000, while a 1935 Auburn 851 Supercharged Speedster brought $1,270,000 — besting the past high sale by over $500k. A 1989 Lamborghini LM002 also set a new world record auction price of $703,500, while a 2019 Porsche 911 Speedster in paint-to-sample Grand Prix White over Yachting Blue leather sold for $775,000.
In total, 33 lots achieved over $1m each at RM Sotheby’s, and five lots brought over $5m.
“It felt like all of the Monterey Car Week attendees were in the room throughout the auction weekend, and we presented an incredibly diverse group of cars,” said Gord Duff, Global Head of Auctions, RM Sotheby’s. “We saw over a dozen examples break world records, including the Ferrari F50, which sold for $5.5 million, among others. The energy in the room on Saturday was electric, and it was especially gratifying to see the first California Spider find a new home for over $17m. Overall, the entire weekend was amazing, and now we’re looking ahead to the fall, where we’ll be offering the Mercedes-Benz W196 and more.”
