Attention automobilia collectors: Mecum has just announced that, in addition to the hoard of collector cars up-for-grabs, it will be offering more than 2,400 items of Road Art and memorabilia during the Indy event, which runs from May 13 to 21. Better yet, all is to be sold without reserve.
Nine private collections have been consigned for the Road Art auction including The Gary Thomas Collection, with an estimated 60 pieces. The group contains gas pumps, pedal cars, and signs — porcelain and neon. The Road Art items will accompany 26 vehicles from the same collection that will also cross the block.
The ACDelco Collection and More is also set to sell this year at Indy. The 750 available items include those from Albert Champion, the cofounder of Champion Spark Plug Company. Oil cans, compounds, solvents and signage are all represented. A portion of the collection will be offered via live auction in Indy with the remaining items offered online using Mecum OnTime.
Larger still is The Dr. Vance Shappley Collection, made up of 1,000 Road Art items, 400 of which will sell live in Indy. The rest will be available over on Mecum OnTime. The collection offers a large selection of gas pumps, signs and more than 100 advertising clocks, including a Coca-Cola Electric Clock Co. single-sided neon clock.
Other items include a Chuc-Wagun single-sided porcelain neon sign, measuring 100 in. by 60 in, and a very cool Southern Select Beer double-sided porcelain neon sign. The round sign is 60.5 inches in diameter.
