Mecum Monterey Reaches $54m in Sales

Mecum’s annual Monterey auction brought a wide range of consignments to the lawn at the Hyatt Regency Hotel from August 15-17 — and that range of consignments powered a final sales total of over $54m in sales. Eleven cars broke the million-dollar mark this year.

The highest seller of the auction was a 1969 Ford GT Lightweight at $7,865,000 — one of 10 factory lightweights built, and still fitted with its original Gurney Weslake engine, body, chassis and transaxle. It had been restored to its original 1969 specifications and was shown at the Quail Motorsports Gathering last year.

Muscle also made news here, with Mecum offering a 1969 Dodge Charger Hemi Daytona that prompted a bidder battle that ended with a $3.36m sale.

The top collector car sales at the Monterey 2024 auction included:

  1. 1969 Ford GT40 Lightweight (Lot S90) at $7,865,000
  2. 1969 Dodge Hemi Daytona (Lot S99) at $3,360,000
  3. 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 (Lot F90) at $3,080,000
  4. 2003 Ferrari Enzo (Lot F77) at $2,860,000
  5. 1970 Plymouth Hemi Cuda Convertible (Lot S97) at $2,576,000
  6. 1967 Ferrari 330 GTS (Lot F96) at $2,530,000
  7. 1967 Chevrolet Corvette L88 Convertible (Lot S96) at $2,352,000

  10. 1957 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster (Lot F91) at $1,237,500

Mecum also announced the addition of Steve McQueen’s Porsche 917K — the hero car from the 1971 Movie Le Mans — to its upcoming Kissimmee sale in January. That car joins a strong lineup of consignments that include the famous Essex Wire Cobra, a 1965 Shelby 427 Competition Cobra that is arguably the winningest Cobra of all time; the 1932 Ford Tommy Foster Roadster that won Most Outstanding Car at the 1953 Detroit Autorama; the 1966 Lola T90 Ford Indy Car driven by Jackie Stewart to 6th place in the 1966 Indianapolis 500 and an AACA and CCCA award-winning 1930 Ruxton Model C Roadster that is one of seven Baker-Raulang-bodied roadsters in existence. The sale will take place from January 7-19 in Kissimmee, FL.
