The Audrain Collections’ 1964 Porsche 904 Carrera GTS took first place in the Post-War Preservation Class during the 71st Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on Sunday, August 21.
The 904, with just 1,800 miles on the clock, is one of the most original in the world, and it’s a very significant car for historians to study. The car is a time machine that takes admirers back to 1964.
Audrain acquired the car in 2020 with the purchase of the Nicholas Begovich Collection. Begovich was a pioneering scientist and engineer, and he assembled a wonderful collection of low-milage, historically important cars.
The following photos show the car from when Audrain CEO Donald Osborne drove it onto the misty fairway at dawn. Other images show the last, finishing touches on the car before the judges arrive, judges examining the car, people admiring the car, the car on the awards ramp and right after the award ceremony.
We hope you enjoy these shots of a very special car’s journey at the 2022 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance!
As the sun rose on concours Sunday, Osborne drove the Porsche onto the green at Pebble Alignment is key at Pebble — it takes precision to get every car on the field positioned correctly — and assistance from concours staff Osborne talks with Revs Institute founder Miles Collier about the significance of this particular 904 during Audrain network filming The 904, positioned at the head of its class, before its judging detail Every car at Pebble is prepped prior to the event, but morning dew adds another layer of detailing needs before the judging can begin Osborne leads the team on getting the 904 prepped and ready for its moment No surface is left untouched in preparation for judging. Audrain master mechanic Lee Castleberry works on the roof. While the team preps the car for its final time, Osborne answers questions about the car Osborne meets the judging team for the Postwar Preservation Class: Scott Grundfor, Dirk Layer and Simon Kidston Starting with the basics of this car’s history, Osborne explains what makes this 904 so special in a class full of special cars The documentation on the 904 is second to none, thanks to original owner Nicholas Begovich saving everything — including his original order form and the Trans World Airlines declarations form from when the car was brought home From there, it’s on to demonstration. At Pebble, cars must display that they’re functional, so everything is checked, from the engine to all the lights and the horn And then it’s on to the details. Here, Layer and Kidston dive into the engine compartment With so few miles, the engine compartment is as it was at the factory Then the team moves up front, looking at the fuel tank Grundfor and Layer note a number of original touches not often seen on other 904s Then it’s on to the interior, also untouched and original And just like that, the judging has ended, the judging team retires to deliberate, and the car is left to the throngs of concours attendees Late in the day, word comes down that the car has won its class — Audrain chairman Nicholas Schorsch drives it to the podium The moment arrives — the Porsche receives its blue ribbon award for Best in Class On its way to the winner’s row And finally, with the trophy and the ribbon proudly on display
