Bonhams|Cars’ annual Quail Lodge auction comes together in just a few short days — and among the consignments this year is a special Porsche that will undoubtedly draw a crowd.
This year’s event will present the “Risky Business” Porsche 928, driven by Tom Cruise in the 1983 film. The car is one of three that were used in the film’s production — this one being a 1979 model, and understood to be the feature car used in most of the principal shots of the car chase scene. That includes the famous moment when Cruise’s character manages to evade the chasing Cadillac, declaring, “Porsche: there is no substitute.”
This car is also equipped with a manual transmission — and it’s said to be the car that actor Tom Cruise used to learn how to drive stick. Chassis 9289201213 was originally painted white and was color-changed to Platinum Metallic for the film. After the film, it was repainted white and passed through several owners before being rediscovered by Lewis Johnsen of Denver, CO.
It was bought by its current owner in 2021, and has spent the past three years in climate controlled storage.
Bonhams|Cars estimates the car to be worth from $1.4m to $1.8m — and it’s important to note that it sold just a few years ago at Barrett-Jackson’s Houston event for $1.98m. “Porsche Panorama” editor Rob Sass wrote about the car and that sale in Linkage #005 in November of 2021.
Bonhams|Cars’ Quail Lodge sale takes place in Carmel Valley, CA on August 16, with preview days on August 14 and 15.
