If you’re in the market for top-level vintage Ferraris, RM Sotheby’s may have what you’re looking for.
Just this week, the company announced an auction of the Aurora Collection, which consists of a handful of vintage Ferraris and two Mercedes-Benzes, all of which will be offered at no reserve as part of the company’s Villa Erba sale on May 20.
This collection has never been shown at any concours event, which should help to drive interest.
The centerpiece of the collection is a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta by Scaglietti. This car is number 62 of the 165 built and is the last SWB built in the 1960 body style. The car was originally delivered to Reno, and later starred in 1968’s The Love Bug. It was given Ferrari Classiche certification in 2008, and it has its original engine and chassis, according to factory records. RM Sotheby’s estimates the car to be worth between €7,500,000 – €8,500,000.
Alongside the SWB is a 1956 Ferrari 500 TR Spider by Scaglietti. This car was raced extensively in period, with wins including a class victory at the 1957 Helsinki Grand Prix. It’s the 3rd of 17 built and was used fairly extensively in historic events in the 1980s, including the 1982 Mille Miglia Storica, the 1984 Targa Florio Storica and a handful of Grand Prix de Monaco Historique races. It’s estimated at €4,000,000 – €4,500,000.
“This is arguably one of the finest single-owner collections in Europe to come to the public market and reaffirms RM Sotheby’s reputation as the pre-eminent auction house for selling high-value single-owner collections,” says Anders Bilidt, RM Sotheby’s Car Specialist, Scandinavia. “Boasting a selection of Ferraris and two Mercedes-Benzes, the pure quality of the individual cars is what makes The Aurora Collection so special.”
Other Ferrari Classische-certified cars in the collection include a 1973 Ferrari 365 GTS/4 Daytona Spider with 3,862 miles, a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4, a 1965 Ferrari 275 GTS and a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT Cabriolet Series II.
The collection also includes a number of modern Ferraris as well, including a 2011 Ferrari SA Aparta, a 2001 Ferrari 550 Barchetta Pininfarina, a 1997 Ferrari 550 Maranello, a 1986 Ferrari Testarossa and a 2002 Ferrari 360 Spider.
In addition, the collection will also present two Mercedes-Benz cars at the auction: A 1955 300SL Gullwing and a 1956 300 Sc Roadster.
The Villa Erba auction takes place on May 20, held in Cernobbio, ITA, on the shores of Lake Como and alongside the Concorso d’Eleganza Ville d’Este.
