Monterey Car Week 2022 is just around the corner, but that doesn’t mean that planning for next year isn’t already underway.

The Pebble Beach Concours has announced that famed coach builder Joseph Figoni will be celebrated at next year’s event, to be held on Sunday, August 20, 2023. It’s a fitting addition, as next year marks the 100th anniversary of Figoni’s coachbuilding firm.

Additional 2023 features include Pegaso, Invicta, Mercedes-Benz S / SS / SSK, and American Sports Cars of the 1950s. More will be announced this fall. A formal call for entries is planned for later fall, with selection slated for January 2023.

Figoni joined with Ovidio Falaschi in 1935, creating Figoni et Falaschi. The pair gained a reputation for excellence soon after, thanks to their streamlined Delahaye roadster shown on a turntable at the 1936 Paris Auto Salon. Just one year later, the pair’s famed Teardrop Coupe, built on a Talbot-Lago T150 C-SS chassis, debuted at the New York Auto Show.

Peter Larsen, French coach building expert and Pebble Beach Concours selection committee member, said, “There are and have been over the years, numerous designers who have had pictures of Figoni designs hanging on their walls. I think that the organic cohesiveness of the bodies, the beauty of their inherent logic, is something that can inspire people across decades.”

Figoni’s work has taken top honors at Pebble twice before, and, as noted by Concours Chairman Sandra Button, “It would be rare to have a year at the Concours that didn’t feature at least one of his creations — and there are often more. But this centennial celebration should be something truly special.”
